Tax Evasion Through Under Declaration of Goods

We recently received complaints from several importers of used clothes regarding concerns of unfair competition in the market. The complaint suggested that several competitors were selling their products at a significantly lower price.

This raised our suspicion of possible tax evasion and we did an analysis on the information gathered. We found their complaints valid hence our immediate intervention to close this revenue loophole.

We asked URA to intercept container number UETU 6204750 and PCIU 9207977 that and when they did we dispatched our team for re-verification, indeed we found inconsistence in weight declaration.

The importers had under declared weights by 4-5 tonnes with an intention to evade tax worth 15-20 millions per container. This scheme has been ongoing for many years and based on our analysis for similar imports from January to September,2024, the Government of Uganda has lost approximately 5 billions in taxes.

We have urged URA to focus more on weight Bridge tickets and enhance physical verifications. This will help ensure that all imports are properly accounted for and that fair competition is upheld within the sector.
